Overview: Quest for Arete is a collectible Card game of magic and duels for players age 12 and up. Our game has both the physical card game and a virtual card game. In the game, players combine magical elements (represented by the cards) to create spells and potions. They compete in duels that end when one player has clearly defeated the other player (are ahead of the other player in points, exceed winning score, and win the round). The website will be the face of the game for physical and virtual players. It will also be one portal for online play (along with smart phones and tablets). We are creating our website to host the virtual aspects of our game and to give information in general about Quest for Arete. The next phase of development will include an online world / social gaming area similar to Farmville, etc. Joomla will be our primary site platform. Although our target audience is 12 and up, we don’t want the website to be childish or “kiddy”. More on this in the Background section below… Background: The back-story of the game sets it in the pre-history of modern chemistry when magicians and sorcerers were actually trained in the undiscovered properties of the natural elements. As an apprentice, the player must duel any other sorcerer the player meets using magical elements (represented by the cards) that combine make potions and spells. Each duel, won or lost, increases the player’s experience and understanding of the elements and therefore, increases the player’s Arete (an ancient Greek word for “Excellence”). We’re basing the game primarily on reality with the perception of magic. The things medieval people believed to be magic were really good science. Quest for Arete has a more family oriented appeal. This means there are “magical” element, but no monsters, demons, excessive violence, or gore. Sexuality should be appropriately applied and no more explicit than a PG-13 level. Attractive characters are compelling, but they don’t need to be in “skin tight” armor. The characters in example sites (below) are a fair guide. Executive Summary: For this contest, we have a total of three pages we need designed. We do not require a functional website from this contest; we are looking for the visual design and layout for the three pages. In the end, we are looking to get all of these pages laid out. We intend to complete the remaining pages by offering follow-on work to the winner and/or finalists after the competition. The main page is the most important of the pages listed below and will be a requirement for the contest. However, for the other 7 pages left, feel free to choose 2 and to create designs for them, resulting in a total of 3 pages being designed. Through this contest, we are looking for talented artists/designers for future development of the website. The winner and any other finalists may be approached for follow on work. This includes web design, card art, or other projects related to the game development. We will carry out the business transactions through 99design’s 1-to-1 invoice system.
Description: We’d like our website to be cohesive. We’d like for our pages to have variety but to also be clearly from the same website. Our theme and style is ancient/old world/ medieval. We are looking for high quality illustrations and environments for our pages. Our concepts are based in a realistic world, so, think fantasy style but without the monsters and demons. However, this does not exclude reality-based ruses used by humans (such as barbarians who wore animal skins to make their enemies believe they were monsters). It’s also important to us that our website is easy to navigate. We would like the navigation menus to remain consistent throughout the site. Elements: We are looking for decorative elements such as etched stone, stone frame work for frames or content holders, medallions/gems for buttons, etc. Widgets: We are looking to have widgets incorporated into the site. We understand that the time constraint does not really allow for made-from-scratch widgets, but if you know of any off-the-shelf widgets that would fit with the style and theme of our website, by all means, please put them in your proposal. Widgets we were potentially thinking of: -a bookshelf widget that allows the user to scroll through the books and to select one to “open”. The book would open up and the user could flip through the pages. -a widget that would allow the user to keep their cards in a holder and then open them up and it lays them out for organizing, or for play.

Virtual Account Management: This will be the “desktop” of the player. They will manage their virtual cards, see their stats, etc. The setting should be like a stone or wooden table top, where they can lay out their cards and see their periodic table, etc. 3. Dueling Arena: This will be where the players go to duel online. Perhaps two to three backdrops (courtyard, swamp, or mountain trail) The game play functions are in development elsewhere. Feel free to place mock elements in your design. 4. Virtual Q4A World: This will be the portal to the virtual Q4A world (the social gaming portion of the game). Think “entrance to Diagon Alley”, or “a village gate”. 5. Library: This will be where the player goes to learn more information about elements and to study up on how to beat their opponents. The setting should be library like, with piles of books, maps, scrolls, etc. The books and scrolls will provide resources to players (link to other web pages, or have internal wiki data about game aspects. There may be a “local paper” which links to a forum) Players can use character cards during play. These characters were trained in one of three competing schools or “houses.” With a character selected in the virtual game, the players may visit the haven of their “house” to train away weaknesses, learn new spells or discover elements to collect. Although the houses compete, they are all members of the same sorcerer’s guild, so they are aware of one another’s strengths and weaknesses. They even share important discoveries for the good of all. 6. Alchemist House: The Alchemists are focused, intelligent tacticians. The feel of this page is scholarly – but don’t imagine they are geeks! Alchemists use surgical precision and cunning to win duels. This house is where the alchemists learn and discover new elements. 7. Sorcerers House: The sorcerers are the most chaotic group. They use the different elements to create explosives and chemical reactions. The feel is chaotic with experiments all around. Their motto is, “Why use an explosion to solve a problem when a much larger explosion will do?” 8.Armorers House: Armorers are well trained in metallurgy. They craft strong weapons and armor. Here they create new weapons and armor and put them to the test.
What to avoid
Our game is based in reality with the perception of magic. We don’t want any monsters. However, we’re alright with the illusion of monsters. E.g. a man wearing animal skins to intimidate opponents or a shadowy figure of a dragon in the night sky that is really a glider. Blood, gore, and excessive violence should be avoided. Sexuality should be appropriately applied and no more explicit than a PG-13 level.
Technical Requirements: -Layered photoshop files with each individual design element (buttons, frames, backdrop, bars, etc) on it’s own layer. -The resolution should be 300+ ppi. - If you know of any off-the-shelf widgets that we could incorporate, then include them in your proposal. -Do not incorporate any outside source elements. Only use our attachments and imagery and any of your own designs. Judging Criteria- The criteria is listed in order of priority: -Unique creativity of design -Quality of the artwork -Responsiveness to art direction and inputs from the judges -Ease of implementation-the platform in which it is created -Do not incorporate any outside source elements. Only use our attachments and imagery and any of your own designs. -Disqualifiers: failure to meet the specific technical requirements Timeline: -10 days for the qualifying round (expect regular feedback). -4 days for finalists selection. -5 days for the finalists round. -Up to 2 weeks to determine the winner (expect less) -Prize transaction completion Note: The winner and other finalists may be approached about follow up design/illustration work with Quest for Arete and will be conducted through 99designs invoice system. Deliverables: -Each page with elements broken into discreet layers, or pieces and in .psd format. -Functional widgets, or links to applications -Looking for explicit, step by step instructions for recreating the template or -a commitment for follow on work to do the installation (the follow on work will pay an additional $150).
