techied got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Product Page design wanted for Inlite Research

We sell a barcode recognition and imaging software development kit to developers building systems that convert paper documents to digital.
Our current site: Current Barcode Recognition product page: http://www.inliteresearch.com/barcode-recognition/ Current Barcode Director product page: http://www.inliteresearch.com/barcode-recognition/barcode-director-process-automation.php Benchmark sites: http://www.assistly.com/ - Big fonts with lots of space. These guys have panels of info similar to what we have on the wireframe. They also have testimonials like us. I like their purple grainy texture. I've been seeing a bit more of that grainy texture - looks kinda like stone - I like it. In terms of feel, these guys nail it. http://99designs.com/web-design - Similar to assistly, big fonts, lots of space, clearly defined panels, clear call to action button. Exactly what I'm looking for in terms of feel / visual. http://www.atlassian.com/ - I like what they did with the main/secondary nav concepts, so I did something similar in my wireframe. Note the graphical secondary nav which serves to identify location within the site. I like the big graphic and bit of text for each main page. I like the use of orange/green/etc to accent specific product lines - would be nice to have one color accent for this Barcode Recognition page and we use a different color for another one of our products. http://www.youneedabudget.com/ - pretty different product because it's just one product and it's online, but I like the style. Modern with big fonts and lots of white space. http://pingdom.com/ - the main site is ok, but I mostly like the new control panel they got coming out (screenshot attached). Note the icons in the nav. That would be pretty great if we could find a good icon set to use as a baseline. Also good use of panels of info with rounded corners and square corners inside - seems to work well. https://plus.google.com/ - I kind of like what Google is doing with their redesign - see the udpated google docs and gmail and google+. It's a simple grey theme and then buttons are big blocks of color. Buttons for the calls to action are going to be a key design element, but it's important that the button text is HTML text (not graphic). (e.g. big Download the Free SDK Now button) Competitors: (our site must look nothing like any of these, but want to include for reference/inspiration) http://www.accusoft.com/barcode.htm http://www.accusoft.com/barcodexpress.htm - best of all our competitor's sites. Good colors/graphics. They kind of go for a puzzle piece theme. Their main graphic is essentially a screen grab of their online demo. Our online demo needs a design overhaul, so we can't use that and our downloadable demo is pretty simple too. I attached a bunch of images from our demo which may serve as good baseline. http://www.atalasoft.com/products/dotimage http://www.atalasoft.com/products/dotimage/barcode-reader - these guys look better with some real color, but I'm not a big fan of the sports theme and the red is too bright. I prefer traditionally bright colors like this to be more muted. http://www.gdpicture.com/ - just redid their site and it's a bit dense with info. They go with software packaging for their pics which I'd prefer to avoid. Note the blue/grey which is the standard in IT. I'd like to use that, but differentiate with some color. http://www.aspose.com/ - this is a bit more typical of most in the space, though better than most. Too dense with info.
Our main product - ClearImage (our brand) Barcode Recognition SDK product page (wireframe attached) includes: - Main navigation with on state indicating the Barcode Recognition section. - Sub-navigation with on state indicating overview page. - Main title, sub-title, and product brief. - Large product image. Can either be on its own (as in the wire) or blend into the background behidn the title, sub-title, brief text. This is a tough one, since the product is a software development kit (just code), it's hard to visualize. The Barcode Recognition (BR) product is used when a document is scanned with a scanner and our software will read the barcode off the document image. Based on the barcode data, the file is typically stored in a database or filed appropriately. So would be fantastic to have some visualization of a document with a barcode on it and some transformation of the barcode into numbers, and document going into a filing cabinet or database. - Call to action button to download the free SDK with a download logo - panel Why ClearImage. Not sure best graphic to put there or if graphic is necessary. Was thinking some kind of barcode image. - panel for Don't Want to Write Code - upselling our Barcode Director application. Image should be a logo for Barcode Director. Maybe some combo of barcode with an arrow. (link to our Barcode Director product below) - Successful Customers panel with customer logos - 2 panels listing features - panel for customer quote Design guidelines: - Body copy should be 16px. I agree with this article: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/10/07/16-pixels-body-copy-anything-less-costly-mistake/ - General color pallet is blue/grey (this is an IT company) with contrasting highlights (yellow, orange, etc) to give some life/flavor - Lots of white space. Modern, clean looking sites seem to have good use of space to make it feel clean. http://99designs.com/ home page is a great example of this - All text must be able to render as HTML - no graphics with text. There is more flexibility to do this now with google web fonts: http://www.google.com/webfonts
We need design for a whole site, so I expect to have at least several other template pages of paid work for the winner (homepage, product feature page, and a few others) Our audience are IT professionals and developers, so the focus is on clear, clean presentation of info. I know the big graphics will be challenging, so those don't need to be amazing. I'm more focused on overall look/feel/style guide. Fonts, spacing, separation of content, navigation, etc.
