LiquidSonics got their new other web or app design by running a design contest:
Re-skin/ design a flat, clean interface skin for a music production plugin
Check out LiquidSonics's Other web or app design contest…
Reverberate is a market leading reverb plugin for musicians. A new version will be launched soon with new features and one or more refreshed UI skins. The task is to stay within the current UI boundaries but provide new graphics assets to give it a flat, modern clean interface.
What's your vision?
A new UI for Reverberate (a reverb plugin) is required. ATTACHMENTS: The attached images are the screens that need to be re-designed/ re-skinned. For the QUALIFYING ROUND just design "Screen 1.jpg" as this is the one that is used most often. As the contest develops we will move onto the other screens. PLEASE NOTE: There is no flexibility on UI layout, all positions are to remain the same. The redesign only covers colour, style and element shape (i.e. tab buttons don't have to stay rounded, a square button would be fine, but it must be within the bounds.) If you want to get a better understanding of the app as a whole, you can: 1. view all the the bulk of the screens that make up the program at the Reverberate homepage: http://liquidsonics.com/software_reverberate.htm 2. Run the application to get a feel for how the dials work (it is important to include the many different dial styles, ones growing from the centre and ones growing from the left). To run it, download the demo and run up in a tool such as Reaper (which can be demoed for free from http://reaper.fm/). Only by running the plugin will you get to see all of the screens of the application and get a feel for how they work. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE: • The backgrounds, buttons, dials etc all need re-skinning into a more clean, flat and modern style taking cues from modern mobile app design style. • We would like to have this reskinned in both a dark and a light option, as we can run multiple skins on the app (Please look to modern tools like Logic X and Pro Tools 12 have a dark theme and Ableton Live is also nice with it's lighter colour scheme) • Choosing a new colour for the main activity colour could work. Reverberate traditionally has been a green with light and blue with dark brand. Deviating from this could be interesting, but a strong design would be needed to justify it. STYLE: • Clean, flat and modern style - taking cues from modern mobile app design. • Clean lines, possibly dark greys/blues with flecks of appealing colour to indicate activity on tab selection, dials, buttons etc. EXAMPLES OF DESIGNS WE THINK ARE INTERESTING: • http://nofilmschool.com/2014/07/frame-io-collaborative-workflow-platform • http://www.newsshooter.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/01.png IMPORTANT CONSTRAINTS: • There is no flexibility on UI layout, all positions are to remain the same. The redesign only covers colour, style and element shape (i.e. tab buttons don't have to stay rounded, a square button would be fine, but it must be within the bounds.) • Buttons can't change in size, but going for a different on/off indication style could be fun on the rounded buttons (i.e. coloured outline with clear middle for off, solid colour for on). FONTS: Fonts should stay basically the same, an arial or helvetica type, because the UI elements that are drawn by the application will be limited to arial and too much of a font difference will be jarring. ***If anybody wants all of the asset pngs, download the OS X demo and extract the bundle using 7zip, they are all present inside it as png files if you root around! I'll add these as an attachment later in the contest if it's going well. HANDOVER REQUIREMENTS: Once a design has been selected it will be important to cut, crop and trim the design into the asset shapes used in the product (i.e. 64 vertically stacked frames for dials, on/off stacks for buttons, background segments for the tabs, etc). A complete set of PSD screens should be provided as well as png copies of the asset segments.
Note, there is a splash screen (attached) that also needs designing (activated by clicking the LiquidSonics logo. On Mac, this also needs a button that says 'License' in it for entering the product key). The topology selection menu now has an additional item (4 in total) that needs the standard circular nuclear warning symbol as option 4 in a single square box with the same in/out style as the 'true stereo' mode. Note that some areas of the layout shown in the middle section when the mixer tab is active are clickable (the mono/stereo circles, parallel/crossed lines, routing track modifier and power icons). --- updates --- 1-August For VST and AU formats the plugin window is fixed size, for AAX format an extra show button will be needed as the window can be shrunk from a menu item to hide the lower half tab region. Don't worry about this until later design rounds. For the first round just design one screen, which ever you think shows your ideas best. If in doubt pick "Screen 1.jpg" as this is the one that is used most often. The EQ view could be multiple colours but this would impose extra overhead which I am keen to avoid, so unless it looks outstanding I am likely to only use a single EQ colour. 5-August The AAX has a slightly different settings screen, shown in one of the attachments. Only needed in final stages of the design.

I've worked with designers and developers for the past 15 years, including managing teams of in-house designers and working with contractors. I've had the pleasure of working with some great people but I have to say Sasha is by far the most talented, dedicated designer I've ever worked with. He is a huge talent. He has a great sense of balancing the business objective with the final design to carry the message. He truly cares about what the outcome is. He's self-motivated. If he doesn't know something, he'll learn it on his own, and he needs very little direction. He nails the concept on the first try nearly every project we work on. Oh, and he also happens to be a grateful, kind human being and easy to work with. I can't say enough. I will continue to work with Sasha as long as he's available! (Some day he'll be famous and I'll have to find a backup.)
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
