John.ridgway got their new app design by running a design contest:
Create a winning mobile app design
Check out John.ridgway's App design contest…
!!! Based on some of your initial feedback we understand the brief is somewhat lacking in very specific direction. We wanted to clarify the reason for this. For this contest, we are interested in a creative concept or design, not necessarily a detailed app design that we can go build from immediately. So we encourage you to take as many creative liberties as you like and create as many concepts as you like; we dont have a specific design in mind at all. We are looking for your creative vision for how a tablet app to manage your home services might look, feel and operate and what the general experience may be. Please let me know if that helps and thanks for the work. !!! Imagine that a company provided a service which allowed you to simply and seamlessly manage all aspects of your home, from home security and thermostats to appliances to AC repairs. And this service could not only allow you to monitor the status or “health” of the various components of your home, but would proactively notify you when something in your home needed attention, similarly to when the “check engine light” comes on in your car. Additionally it could even offer to schedule onsite repair/service to your home if needed. All this management is done through a single interface or dashboard, which users can access on any device. The assignment is to design the dashboard for this service as displayed on a tablet device. Home Services monitored and provided include: 1. AC / Heating “health “and service monitoring 2. Home Automation: Automatic & remote controls for lights, thermostat, appliance, etc 3. Home Security: Alarms, Video Monitoring, remote access, etc 4. Pools: maintenance, repairs, heating, power, etc 5. Lawn & Garden: Landscaping, Sprinklers, gardening, mowing, etc
The Audience is mainly Home owners who want a better, innovative way, to manage all aspects of their home. The app should be simple, clean and easy to navigate.
1. Dashboard Home Screen - The Dashboard Home Screen should be a dashboard UI that allows a quick glance at the status of each of the 5 home solutions. It should simply and easily allow users to see what’s going on with their home. - The dashboard should provide access to the full suite of functionality (managing items in the home, health status/alerts, ways to schedule on site repairs/service ) and give priority to items that may require the user’s attention. The dashboard should also demonstrate the site navigation. 2. “Manage” View for one home service item - The “Manage” View Screen should be a deep dive into one of the features of the system. Designer’s choice between any of the five services mentioned above. - Your particular choice will not determine the outcome of the contest. It is just to provide an example. 3. “Health and Service” View for one service (with alert and call to action to approve a service appointment) - The “Health and Service” View Screen should be a deep dive into viewing the health and service of one of the services mentioned above. Just for example, consider the AC / Heating service. This screen could show information like (but not limited to) type of unit, installation date, average energy usage history, maintenance history, etc. For the health and services portion, the screen should include an alert with call to action to approve/schedule a service appointment. (For example, Your AC unit hasn’t been serviced in 18 months. “An AC repair technician can be at your house by 4pm, would you like to schedule that service?”)
What to avoid
We’d like the app to appeal to all types of people, not necessarily just the high tech/early adopter crowd

It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their app design.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
John.ridgway collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
