The backcountrypost website is an online community oriented around the outdoors, specifically hiking, backpacking, canyoneering, etc. The users of the site share photos and trip reports of their adventures. The geographic focus is the American Southwest desert as well as the surrounding high alpine mountain ranges although any outdoors content from around the world is welcome. . The logo I want designed should include an icon or emblem that embodies the outdoors as the members of my site see them. These are the people who are out hiking all the time. I am very open to what this emblem could be. Ideas that we've tossed around include a tree, a boot print, a backpacker, a bear, etc. Whatever it is, it has to be COOL. Our members want to be able to slap these on their cars, water bottles, etc. A good example of cool and simple that I like is the backcountry.com goat or the Arbor Snowboards tree logo. . The idea I've liked the most so far was to use a cairn for the logo. A cairn is a stack of rocks used to mark a trail in areas where the trail is not otherwise defined. Sometimes they are huge, several feet tall, sometimes they are just 2-3 rocks stacked up. If you were to mock something up with a cairn in it, here are my ideas on how I would and wouldn't like to be. I don't want it to be too tall in relation to the logotype. I also want it to be simple and clean enough that it can be printed in one or two colors, perhaps as a silhouette. Or at least an option of the main design that can be printed in a 1 or 2 color design. And last thing, I do not want it to look like a precariously balanced stack of rocks or one of those zen garden rock stacks made of smooth, symmetrical river rock. . If you decide to pursue the cairn idea, here are some links for inspiration, just to give you an idea of how a hiker might see them. . http://www.nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/images/rockcairns_1.jpg http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-9468840-ancient-cairn-on-lanai.php?st=81dcc9b http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-19237959-trial-marker.php?st=81dcc9b http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-6459278-cairn.php?st=81dcc9b http://www.flickr.com/photos/ibenick/5701224917/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/ibenick/5682866138/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/ibenick/5576008614/ . The existing logotype that we are using now is simply a font called 'Pricedown'. I downloaded it for free from 1001 Fonts. Some other font sites have it but the version from 1001 is the correct one as some of the letters vary. I could really go either way on whether we keep that font in the logo though. I really like how it condenses the long URL into something relatively short. That is very important to me if the new logo uses anything different. I also like the clean look of that font. . The logo will be on the website and on t-shirts, stickers, water bottles, etc. It would be great if the logo for the site had a bit more complexity but could be converted to something more simple but still recognizable for printing on merchandise. . Visiting the site at www.backcountrypost.com should give you a good feel for it. I would recommend viewing some of the trip reports to get the vibe of what you are designing for. You may also want to look at the blog layout which is how the site started and has become so popular, www.backcountrypost.com/blog/. The theme of the site is black/grey and the colors are simple so that people's photos of beautiful landscapes dominate the palette.
