rokos got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
Design an ICON for an RSS News Aggregation app and service (Frequent Feedback!)
Check out rokos's Icon or button contest…
Our first product, "Mosaiscope", is an RSS News Aggregator that is both simple and powerful. It is both a software product as well as a service.
What's your vision?
This contest is to design the icon for the RSS News Aggregation product, "Mosaiscope". This icon will be the defining icon, logo, and branding for the "Mosaiscope" product everywhere. I am looking for a design that is: - creative - unique - simple - instantly recognizable - will work in full color as well as in Black & White - it can stand on its own without the name explicitly by it The icon needs to stand out as much as the app icon as the recognizable brand for the product.
Monitoring this contest is my top priority. I will provide frequent feedback on your submissions as often as possible (which will likely be daily). Additional Info: - "Mosaiscope" is both a software product and a service - there are no official colors for this product yet, so this is open to your interpretation - Taxonomy of the "Mosaiscope" product name - "Mosaiscope" is the combination of 2 words; "Mosaic" & "Kaleidoscope". Both are strong visually so you should consider how to incorporate then visually. Things to stay away from: - Do NOT use the classic "RSS" image in the design. Unless you have something that blows me away, stay away from it. (example of what NOT to do: https://dribbble.com/shots/960204-Icon-for-Rss-Reader-Mac-Os-App ) - Any use of the first letter of the app name, so "M", can not be explicit. If you use it it needs to be incorporated into the design and be subtle and almost unnoticeable. I would prefer something that does not include a letter at all, but I have seen many icons that it works with so I'll leave it open as a possibility. Thoughts: I have a couple of icons I like and look at them for design inspiration for this challenge. They, in no way, define how you have to design the icon, but are rather design inspirations and insight into my taste: - I like the icon for Apple's photos app as one starting point for design (example: http://drkvsrit.in/gallery/gallery.png ) - I like the icon & logo for the company Kaleidescape for inspiration. (example: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe…e_logo.png ) - I like AirBnB's new logo ( http://c.fastcompany.net/multisite_files/fastcompany/imagecache/inline-large/inline/2014/07/3033174-inline-belocomparison.jpg ) - I like all of the icons for TabBots stuff ( http://tapbots.com ) In the end, the icon has to be bold, standalone, and instantly recognizable. Wow me!
