HIJAB: The Issues and The Evidence
Khaled Abou El Fadl
Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl is one of the world’s leading authorities on Shari'ah, Islamic law and Islam, and a prominent scholar in the field of human rights. He is the Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law, and founder of the Institute for Advanced Usuli Studies (The Usuli Institute). He is the author of numerous books and articles on Islam and Islamic jurisprudence. His latest book is Reasoning with God: Reclaiming Shari‘ah in the Modern Age. He is the recipient of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) 2020 Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion.
This is a smart yet readable book for critical thinkers who are open to a more sophisticated treatment of the idea of hijab (woman's headcovering in Islam). This book does not argue for or against, but presents the history, context, issues and evidence around the issue and allows the reader to come to their own conclusions. It is a book for spiritual seekers, Muslims and non-Muslims, and anyone interested in a more nuanced treatment of all things Islamic.
Younger generation, open minded, critical thinkers who are spiritual seekers, Muslim or non-Muslim, interested in the topic of the Muslim head-covering as a symbol of either oppression or liberation, piety or a lack of education. It is a much more nuanced story than it appears.
